About Mountain Park Lodges

A brief history…

In the early 1960’s several families from the Edmonton area were coming to Jasper on a regular basis, particularly for skiing. As their families grew, it became increasingly more difficult for them to obtain accommodation in Jasper due to the few hotels and motels available in town at the time.

One evening, during a gathering, someone suggested in a more or less joking fashion that they should build their own hotel to avoid the accommodation problem in the future. Dr. Jack Day, an original founder, followed through with the ides and formed a group to build such a hotel.

In 1968, the doors of the Lobstick Lodge were opened with a total of 77 rooms. In 1972, this was expanded to the current 139 rooms. The site selection , backing onto the mountains, was made for the peace and quiet of the guests.

The name “Lobstick” is derived from the day of the early Explorer and Traders. A lobstick was used to identify trails and/or to signify a point of rendezvous. A lobstick was made by lopping off the lower brances of a tree. There is one original lobstick, which we know of, still existing today. It is located just east of the town on the banks of the Athabasca river and it can be seen from Highway 16.

On March 1st, 1988, The Andrew Motor Lodge was purchased from The Andrew family. The original structure was built in 1958 by the Andrews. After an extensive renovation program, we officially renamed our 97 rooms Amethyst Lodge in May of 1990. The name “amethyst” was selected because of the beauty of the Amethyst Lakes in the Tonquin Valley. At this time, Mountain Park Lodges was officially recognized as the umbrella name to cover both hotels.

On July 1st, 1994, the Marmot Lodge was purchased. The Marmot has 107 rooms, and has always been a great hotel, the company is very proud to have it as one of the family of Mountain Park Lodges.

In an effort to diversify and provide a “different” experience Pyramid Riding Stables was purchased on November 1st, 1997. The Riding Stables are located3 km from the town of Jasper on Pyramid Road.

Mountain Park Lodges purchased Pocahontas Cabins on the 15th of April 2002. The first phase of renovations was completed in the spring of 2003, while second phase was completed in June of 2006. with 57 diverse units, Pocahontas Cabins attracts visitors all year round.
